ARTS & SPIRITUALITY
The
goal of this committee is to engage the artistic talents of our Parish, interweaving
the arts & our spirituality.
St. Genesius Guild
Named
for the patron Saint of actors, the guild invites creative artists of all disciplines
and ages to participate in and initiate various events. Past events supported
by the St. Genesius Guild include: the Living Nativity, the Global Village Café,
in home discussion groups, and “instant” readings of Shakespeare. We also
serve events that call for a “creative” touch. It is our goal to be a well where
creative juices may gather, intermingle and quench the creative spirit of our
parish community.
Living Nativity
The
“Living Nativity” is an inter-generational meditative Christmas experience.
Parishioners and friends portray the holy family, angel, shepherds and townspeople.
Staged outdoors and featuring live animals, this moving tableau, accompanied
by pastoral music, provides a musical oasis from the commercial hustle of the
holiday season for participants and observers.
Labyrinth
The
Labyrinth is a walking meditation tool that has been part of St. John's since
1995. Diana uses it with the Confirmation Class, and it may
be used upon request from members of St. John's or outside groups. Silence
of music provides a background for walking. Guided meditations are sometimes
a part of the experience.
When opened, it covers the
Parish Hall floor and replicates the 3-fold mystical path of purgation (stripping
away), illumination (experience of God), and union (coming back into the world).
The Labyrinth is also a metaphor for our lives and can be walked by as
many as 16 people at a time. It is, therefore,
a powerful opportunity for groups such as prayer or journey groups or for Vestry
and congregations to walk at a time of decision-making.
This
year there is emerging an increasing interest in the use of the Labyrinth, and
I encourage those of you who are interested sign up to participate in this exciting
and unique ministry.
Christmas Pageant
The Children’s Christmas Pageant is held in the Parish Hall on the Epiphany
Sunday. Help is needed with costumes,
refreshments, setting up, and watching the children during rehearsals.
